winter sport

This year for winter sport I chose to play Rugby for St Francis Stingrays.

This is the St Francis Stingrays and this is my experience is in the year 5/6 rugby team.
We won, we lost and we improved! My favorite position is 2nd five. I have improved my fitness a little bit since the start of the year. I can tell that because I can run for longer.

Our coach was Steve and he was good because he didn't want us to just win, but to play well and have fun.
At your school, do you do winter sport and what is your favorite sport?

Reading

This term in reading we have been reading about the environment. I have enjoyed all of the new information that I have now learnt.
For reading this week, my group read this article: Earth's resources

The facts that I now know since I have read this text are:

That wood is better for the environment but not if you do not replace the forests.
Less than 1 percent of the Earth's water is ready to drink.
An electronic tablet contains more than 35 different minerals.
More than 60 percent of the Earth's land was once covered in trees. Now it is less than 30 percent.

As a result of reading this, I know that we need to plant new forests and to figure out how to use less water.
I now better understand Earth's resources

So what can you do to keep our Earth healthy further generations?

Next year I have to run 3 ks (3 laps) I'm not looking forward to it.

PBL - Term 1

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about kindness and the big
question was: How can we build community through our actions?

First, we explored some collaborative activities and discussed how we could include
kindness and build a sense of community through our actions at camp. Next, we were
organised into groups where we had to unpack the above question. In our groups we
considered how we could spread community and kindness through our entire school
community. We decided that we would offer something that was free and would make
others happy.

We created an action plan and talked with the Paiaka teachers. We asked them to look
out for children showing kindness and then give them the tokens that we had made.
The tokens were for rippa rugby/touch, infected and ball elimination. We would then take
\those good children out and play those games.

For our final product our group decided to do games for the children in Paiaka  Hub 3
times a week. The teachers said yes so we went on from there

How did our action build a sense of community in the school? By getting to know lots
of the Paiaka kids better and not just the people in out hub.

I contributed by playing the teams, helping the younger children who didn’t know how
to play, talking with the teachers in Paiaka Hub, making certificates, putting stickers
on them and organising the gear.

I think the PBL might impact on others because fitness is fun but it is also important -
it can be boring unless you look at it with a positive mindset. The Paiaka children had
a good time and enjoyed it.

What I learned about working with others that it is not all about you and that you need
to have a role and that you can’t do everything - you share the workload.

What is your favorite sport and why?

christmas cards

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because …it was book character day

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

My team made this…our product was christmas cards mas with milk food dye anddishwashing liquid

My highlight from this PBL was selling the cards.
Next time I would not sell the same thing and i would keep the same group because we had a great leader who kept the group on task!

PBL term 3

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;
What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?

First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas. Culture is were you and you ancestors come from
Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage. I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do.
In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we concentrated on Maori legends. I read hatupatu and the bird woman.  I have written my own legend called/I retold the legend of hatupatu and the bird woman in my own words.

We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains. Some students wrote the script, some students took on the job of making all the artwork, some worked hard on organising the music and others took on the role of bringing the story alive with dance and drama.

For our production I contributed by being Putauaki [one of the main roles)
I think the show might impact on others by teaching people about a Maori legend that is not that popular

What I learned about working with others was it can be confusing.
